What Drives Us

Pencils, Inc. Turns a Setback into a Success
During Micro production time, the fifth graders running Pencils, Inc. panicked— the warehouse was out of pencils! Mrs. Williams suggested creating a decorative add-on, but their first attempt with pom-poms failed. A third grader overheard and proposed using pipe cleaners to attach decorations. They took his advice and, by Marketplace Day, had a new product—pipe cleaner pencil grips with optional Valentine’s messages. Their quick thinking, teamwork, and creativity turned a crisis into a holiday hit, showcasing Micro’s emphasis on problem-solving and collaboration!
Second Grader Takes Charge: A Lesson in Financial Responsibility
As part of our school-wide math goal, Micro facilitators ensure students track both business and personal finances. Recently, a second grader noticed discrepancies in her online bank account. Shocked to find missing deposits and a withdrawal, she checked her receipts and confirmed the errors. Initially frustrated, she decided to approach the bank manager on her day off. With proof in hand, she resolved the issue. The Micro model empowers students with financial responsibility and self-advocacy skills—even at a young age!
A Pop-Up Success: The Key Chain Venture That Stayed
Micro City’s pop-up businesses typically operate for a few months before closing as sales decline. However, one key chain venture refused to shut down, citing strong profits and fresh product ideas. At a manager meeting, the young owners presented financial data and new designs to justify staying open. Their proposal was approved, and these determined fourth-grade entrepreneurs now run one of Micro City’s most successful pop-ups!
From Math Reluctant to Financial Leader
Greg joined Riverwood (then MACS) as a “math reluctant” student, discouraged by new concepts. However, Micro nurtured his strengths in art and creativity, eventually inspiring him to aim higher. Seeing peers take on leadership roles, Greg sought his own impact. Through Management 101, he reshaped his view of math, excelling in financial management and earning the role of financial manager at Micro University. In this position, he has shown strong leadership, fostering an inclusive environment. Without Micro’s influence, Greg might never have discovered his ability to overcome challenges and achieve success through perseverance.
